Sustainability and Social Enterprise

Find out about the work being done at Sachibondu Mission

Sachibondu is rich with natural resources. However, it is also home to extreme poverty and lack in the communities surrounding it. We believe that Sachibondu has the ability to produce resources from within itself that would help feed, sustain, and develop the community.

Honey Production:

We have established our own honey production using on-site beehives. By maintaining and expanding these hives, we can harvest pure, natural honey that can be sold to generate income for the community. Our goal is to increase the number of hives over time, thereby increasing our honey production capacity and creating a sustainable source of revenue. This initiative not only provides financial benefits but also promotes pollination and supports the local ecosystem.

Fish Farming:

To further enhance our sustainability efforts, we are wanting to set up fish ponds and stocking the on-site lake with fish. This will provide a reliable source of protein for the community and can also generate income through the sale of surplus fish. By implementing proper management techniques and ensuring the health of the ecosystem, we aim to create a long-term, sustainable fishing operation that can support the nutritional needs of the community.

Second-Hand Clothing:

'We regularly purchase clothes bales to sell the the local community, bringing in funds to help the running costs of the health centre. This income is vital and really keeps the health centre going! The community also love having access to second hand clothes at a fair price'

Hand-Crafted Jewelry

Maseki is a project where local girls and ladies will learn to produce handmade earrings out of clay. We aim to sell these beautiful creations to raise income for Sachibondu and for the ladies who make the jewellery. Alongside the creating of these pieces, we aim to get alongside the women and connect, encourage and empower them. Discipleship alongside income generation.

We've made our first collection and have just launched our Maseki Instagram page.

Sustainable Farming:

At Sachibondu, we are committed to promoting sustainable farming practices. Our focus is not only on growing food for the community but also on educating people about sustainable methods and soil sustainability. These practices help maintain soil health, improve fertility, and ensure long-term productivity of the land. By empowering the community with this knowledge, we aim to foster a culture of sustainable agriculture that can benefit generations to come.

In addition to these initiatives, we are exploring other sustainable social enterprises that can contribute to the well-being of the community. These may include:

- Establishing a small-scale poultry farm to provide eggs and meat

- Creating a community garden where members can grow their own produce

- Developing a handicraft cooperative where local artisans can produce and sell their wares

Through these sustainable social enterprises, our goal is to create a self-sufficient community that can generate its own resources and income. By harnessing the natural resources available at Sachibondu and empowering the community with knowledge and skills, we believe we can foster a sense of pride, ownership, and empowerment among the people.

Sachibondu has the potential to become a model for sustainable development, demonstrating how a community can thrive by leveraging its own strengths and resources.

We are actively seeking partnerships and support to further develop and expand these sustainability initiatives. By working together, we can create a lasting impact and bring about positive change in the lives of the people of Sachibondu and the surrounding communities.
